How to Use CAC Card on iPad

CAC usage on iPad has gotten complicated with all the reader options, app requirements, and iOS limitations flying around. As someone who has helped many configure CAC access on iPads, I learned everything there is to know about making it work. Today, I will share it all with you.

Reader Options

Probably should have led with this section, honestly. iPads need Lightning or USB-C compatible readers depending on model. Not all CAC readers work with iOS—check compatibility before purchasing.

App Requirements

That’s what makes iPad CAC access different—standard Safari doesn’t support CAC. You need apps like ID.me, Purebred, or agency-specific solutions for CAC authentication.

Setup Process

Install required apps, connect compatible reader, insert CAC. Configuration varies by app and agency requirements.

Limitations

iPad CAC support isn’t as comprehensive as Mac. Some DoD sites may not work. Check if your needed sites support iPad access.
