About Apple Mac in Government
Apple Mac in Government is an independent resource dedicated to helping federal employees, DoD civilians, government contractors, and state and local government staff get the most out of their Mac computers in official work environments.
Our Mission
Mac use in government has grown significantly over the past decade, but practical, accurate guidance tailored to government IT environments has been hard to find. Our mission is to fill that gap with tested, clearly written guides covering everything from initial setup to advanced security configurations — without the jargon.
What We Cover
- CAC and PIV Setup — Configuring Mac for Common Access Card authentication, DoD certificate installation, and smart card troubleshooting
- Security and Compliance — STIG configurations, FileVault encryption, FISMA/NIST controls, and CrowdStrike Falcon on Mac
- MDM and Deployment — Jamf Pro, Kandji, Mosyle, and government Mac fleet management
- Approved Software — Microsoft 365, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, VPN clients, and collaboration tools in .gov and .mil environments
- Hardware Guidance — Which Mac models are approved, compatible CAC readers, and approved peripherals
- Troubleshooting — Certificate errors, browser CAC issues, network connectivity, and common Mac problems in government settings
Our Standards
Every guide on this Site follows these principles:
- Tested — We verify instructions before publishing
- Current — We update content when macOS versions, STIG guidelines, or DoD policies change
- Practical — Written for real users, not just IT professionals
- Transparent — We clearly disclose affiliate relationships and cite official sources
