Government VPN on Mac – Big-IP, GlobalProtect, and AnyCon…

Government VPN on Mac

VPN configuration on government Macs has gotten complicated with all the different clients, security requirements, and network configurations flying around. As someone who has set up VPN across federal Mac deployments, I learned everything there is to know about connecting securely to government networks. Today, I will share it all with you.

Common VPN Clients

Probably should have led with this section, honestly. Big-IP, GlobalProtect, Cisco AnyConnect—different agencies use different solutions. Use only the client your IT department provides.

Configuration

That’s what makes proper VPN setup essential—wrong configuration means no access or security gaps. Follow your agency’s specific instructions exactly.

Authentication

VPN access typically requires PIV/CAC card or multi-factor authentication. Have your credentials ready before attempting connection.

Troubleshooting

When VPN fails, check internet connectivity first. Try disconnecting and reconnecting. Contact IT helpdesk if problems persist—they can see server-side issues you can’t.
