How to Access DoD Websites on Mac

DoD website access on Mac has gotten complicated with all the certificate requirements, CAC authentication, and browser configurations flying around. As someone who has troubleshot DoD web access across Mac deployments, I learned everything there is to know about getting connected. Today, I will share it all with you.

The Basics

Probably should have led with this section, honestly. DoD websites require CAC authentication. You need a working CAC reader, proper certificates installed, and a compatible browser.

Browser Choice

That’s what makes browser selection important—Safari and Chrome both work, but configuration differs. Some DoD sites work better in specific browsers. Have multiple browsers ready.

Certificate Installation

DoD root certificates must be installed and trusted in Keychain Access. Without these, secure connections fail. Your IT department can provide the correct certificate bundle.

Common Issues

Certificate errors usually mean missing or untrusted DoD certificates. Authentication failures may indicate CAC reader or middleware problems. Contact your IT helpdesk for persistent issues.
