Is a CAC Card a Military ID?
CAC card classification has gotten complicated with all the credential types, authorization levels, and usage rules flying around. As someone who has explained CAC functionality to many federal employees, I learned everything there is to know about what the card actually is. Today, I will share it all with you.
Short Answer
Probably should have led with this section, honestly. The CAC serves as the standard identification for military personnel, DoD civilians, and eligible contractors. For active duty military, it functions as their military ID.
Multiple Functions
That’s what makes the CAC unique—it combines identity verification, physical access, and logical access in one card. It’s an ID, a building key, and a network credential.
Not Just for Military
Contractors and civilian employees also receive CACs. These provide similar functionality but may have different access levels and benefits eligibility.
Proving Military Status
For veteran benefits, the CAC alone may not suffice. DD-214 or other documentation typically required. Understand what your CAC proves and what it doesn’t.
